Back to the Basics – a Seriously and Desperate Need

Around the world leaders are coming to realize that they are being asked by the Holy Spirit to go back to the basics – and, as they do, they are realizing that they must go even more basic than they first though “basic” would be.

In a recent unscheduled supper conversation in an airport in Moscow I was speaking with 2 leaders of a very large network of churches that is being shaken to its foundations by the Holy Spirit. These two key leaders and I have had numerous conversations over the last 18 months about “the basic” and it was evident that they had just had a major revelation of how basic “the basics” can really be.

They had come, as have I, to realize that many in our born again churches are not born again. They think that they are but they are not because they have never been convicted by the Holy Spirit of their sins. They have never experienced true godly sorrow leading to real repentance. And, the Bible states clearly that without repentance there is no salvation. It is that basic – we need to evangelize our local congregations and do so soon and often.

We also need to come to understand deep in our hearts that those who are truly born again and thus disciples of the Lord Jesus do not know the Gospel well enough to share it in a relevant and understandable way. They know enough to be saved but not enough to actually lead others to the saving knowledge of the Lord. This needs to change quickly. The true believers needed to be trained and equipped to share the gospel in a relevant and thus effective method.

These leaders had come to this realization after many discussions with me and each other and after much prayer. They had taken a long and often difficult look at their churches and the leadership of the assemblies within their network and were shocked at what they discovered and what the Holy Spirit revealed to them. Back to the basics – with a resolve and seriousness they only can come from the Holy Spirit.

I believe it will also be revealed to many key leaders around the world that not only is there a grave and very dangerous misunderstanding of the gospel of the Kingdom but that even out understanding of and thus experience of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is somewhat off of what the Bible presents to us. I believe that as the Lord shakes His Church that many will come to a true understanding of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, the resulting supernatural gifts that come with the experience, and the true purpose of the gifts – power evangelism; a power evangelism that is based in the regular use of and flow of the 9 gifts of the Spirit in daily life.

This Churchquake will impact both those who call themselves Spirit-filled or Charismatic Churches, all branches of true renewals and revivals that have been experienced over the past 100 years, as well as many mainline denominational groups that do not believe in this second encounter with God and the resulting empowerment. Many of the current “movements” will not be involved in this ‘quaking’ as pride and arrogance will keep them out.

It is time, once again, to make the main things the main things – and no longer major in the minors. The basics are seriously needed and will breath new life and vitality into those who respond to the shaking and move into what the Lord is doing.
